5 REASONS TO PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN...FOR A LITTLE WHILE
We get it. We love our phones, too. We can spend hours on Instagram and Pinterest, and we really aren't ashamed. After all, the internet is an amazing tool, but sometimes, you just need to put the phone down. Here are 5 reasons why:
1) You're missing the world around you.
This is the simplest reason. If you're too busy looking at a phone screen, you aren't looking at your surroundings. Not only could you be missing something completely beautiful, it's also an issue of safety. Situational awareness is super important to safety, especially if you're walking (or worse: driving).
2) Social media can cause unhappiness.
Constantly, scrolling through social media feeds has been shown to lower your happiness levels and make you feel more envious. It's important to remember that social media is the equivalent of people's highlight reels, showing just the happiest, most exciting moments of life. Don't let your Friday get ruined because your Facebook friends have more exciting plans.
3) It's just plain rude.
When you're around other people, being glued to your phone can be just plain rude. We aren't saying that your morning public transit has to be a phone free event, but the next time you're at a family dinner or hanging out with friends, please put the phone away. You might find that conversation with the actual humans around you is a lot more fun than scrolling through Twitter.
4) You'll sleep better.
It's fairly well known that the blue light of your phone screen keeps your brain running at full speed. Put the phone down, pick up a book, and you might find yourself getting a better night's sleep.
5) Sedentary lifestyles aren't healthy.
Obviously, 30Fifteen is always advocating for more movement, so it's no surprise that we should mention that instead of spending an hour playing on your phone, you could be spending that hour doing yoga or playing tennis. That being said, there are a ton of fitness related apps available for download, so if you just can't put the phone down, maybe try downloading a fitness app.
When we first started writing this post, it was titled "5 Reasons to put Your Phone Down," but we realize how vital technology is for communication, whether it's for work, networking, or just staying connected to loved ones. That's why we amended the title, to encourage everyone to put their phone down, even if it's just for a little while.
