GET YOUR BRAIN OFF OF THE INTERNET
It’s easy to get locked into being plugged in constantly. I mean, Team 30Fifteen can’t be the only ones who catch ourselves endlessly refreshing our social media feeds. They say the internet, while gloriously interconnected, has plenty of negative effects on health and happiness. The light from your phone alone can keep you up at night by messing with your sleep patterns. Social media has been linked to increased anxiety, and you may have noticed that having the world at your fingertips has put your memory on the fritz. If you’re feeling like you’re dealing with internet overload, we have a few ideas on how you can unplug and recharge.
Whether you like to paint, scrapbook, or knit, getting your creative juices flowing is a great way to get your brain off the internet. We found a cool craft idea on Pinterest. It’s super easy to make, and it makes a cool, artsy addition to a yoga space, garden, or even a book shelf. All it takes is a smooth river rock, a Sharpie, and your creativity!
Read a book.
Or a newspaper. Or something longer than a Buzzfeed article. Books are great for getting lost in, and (huge plus) they don’t emit that nasty sleep killing blue light that your phone does.
Plant a garden and watch it grow.
Sometimes when we need some time unplugged, we like to get our hands a little dirty and tend to our garden/plants on our very small outdoor space. We’re not talking full scale farming, here, but a little potted herb garden does the trick. Green onions and herbs like cilantro and basil grow quickly and with little effort on your part. It also freshens up your recipes, and you can guarantee it’s organic!
Take a hike.
Or even just a walk. To really get your brain off the internet, fresh air and greenery can’t be beat. If you find yourself city-locked, a brisk walk around the block or a trip to the local park works just as well. Anything to get your blood pumping and your brain happy.
When all else fails, turn your phone off.
Sometimes our internet usage becomes a borderline addiction. For me, this is the ultimate sign that I need to unplug, but there is always the temptation. When I find myself unable to focus on my life outside of the internet, I shut my phone off and put it aside – at least for a little while.
The internet is pretty vital to life these days. It keeps us connected with loved ones and at work. It’s an incredible learning tool.
